NeurogesX gains on positive second study in phase III trial
Shares of NeurogesX, Inc. (Nasdaq: NGSX) jumped this morning after the biopharmaceutical company announced positive top-line results from its second study of NGX-4010, the company's dermal patch containing chemical TRPV1 agonist in patients with postherpetic neuralgia.
The controlled Phase 3 trial study met its “pre-specified primary endpoint: the reduction in pain from baseline to study weeks 2-8,” according to NeurogesX. This is the second of two successful Phase 3 clinical trials of NGX-4010 for postherpetic neuralgia that the Company has completed in the past year.
NGX-4010 is a dermal patch designed to manage peripheral neuropathic pain.
Postherpetic neuralgia is a condition that affects your nerve fibers and skin. During an initial infection of chickenpox, some of the virus can remain in your system, lying dormant inside nerve cells. Years later, factors such as age, illness, stress or medications can reactivate the virus, causing shingles, or reactivate for no reason.
Shares of NeurogesX gained 18.3%, or $1.30, to $8.41 in late morning trading Tuesday.
