One Texas startup called Alpha School says the answer is YES.

Schools across America have largely used the same approach to education for the last 200 years. A teacher in a classroom provides direct instruction to a group of 20 – 30 students.

Alpha School is using Artificial Intelligence to disrupt that model and plans to change everything.

The company has 3 commitments…

1. Kids need to LOVE school – more than going on vacation.

3. Students spend more hours in a day learning life skills like leadership, teamwork, entrepreneurship, and public speaking.

Artificial Intelligence is at the core of Alpha School.

Billionaire entrepreneur Joe Liemandt is the founder of Trilogy Software. And he’s now a co-founder at Alpha School and plans to invest up to $1 billion in this venture.

The school uses its AI tutor to create custom lessons for each child. These are tailored to meet kids at their level. Lessons are also adapted to align with student interest and help keep them engaged.

Alpha is constantly testing students through its app. This allows for the AI to continually adjust lessons to challenge the students and assure mastery before moving forward.

Alpha School doesn’t have any teachers. Instead, it has guides who serve as coaches and motivators for students and are paid roughly $100,000 per year.

Kids typically spend 2 hours per day working independently with an AI tutor on core academic subjects. Students are motivated to get their academic work done quickly through gamification in the app.

Completing this work then unlocks 4 hours of life skills work with guides and other students.

The results have been impressive. Alpha claims that its students are growing 2.6x faster than peers on MAP tests. Meanwhile, students are in the top 99% of national averages for test scores.

Alpha School is proving out its new approach at private schools in Texas, California, Florida and Virginia. Tuition costs $40,000 – $65,000 per year.

The company’s co-founder says that Alpha spends $10,000 per student on AI computing resources. Today, that cost would be prohibitive for most schools. Yet Moore’s Law suggests that this cost of compute could drop by 80% in the next 5 years.

Alpha plans to expand with additional private school campuses in 2026. The school is also exploring partnerships with charter schools and licensing its AI models for home school kids, private schools or even public schools.
