Google is planning to build new datacenters in space.
CEO Sundar Pichai says the first satellite data centers will be tested in 2027. The company plans to buildout this project over the next ten years.
One new space launch platform could become a critical partner.
“There is no doubt to me that in 10 years, we will view it as normal to build data centers in space,” says Pichai.
Google isn’t the only one betting on data centers in space.
Elon Musk says that SpaceX will launch solar powered space data centers within 4 – 5 years. Jeff Bezos has made similar predictions. And former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bought a rocket company for this specific purpose.
So, why are these tech insiders focused on space?
It’s because there are two big advantages.
First, space data centers can harness the energy of the sun by using solar power. Their proximity to the sun means that they can generate much more electricity.
Second, it’s incredibly cold in space. That means that these space-based data centers will be naturally cooled due to the cold temperature in space.
This new project means that there will be significantly more demand for space launches. That clearly benefits existing players including SpaceX, Blue Origin and RocketLab.
Plus, one new space stock could quickly play a big role in new launches.
