Warren Buffett’s Big Secret (And It’s Not in the Shareholder Letter)

I’m a huge fan of Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK) is one of the biggest positions in my portfolio.  I religiously read his annual letter to shareholders. And I may even attend the Berkshire annual meeting this year.
Buffett preaches the virtues of “Buy-and-Hold” investing. In fact, he even encourages people to simply buy and hold the S&P 500. In a recent shareholder letter, he describes his plans for providing for his wife after his death:

Cash will be delivered to a trustee for my wife’s benefit. My advice to the trustee could not be more simple: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard’s.) I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors – whether pension funds, institutions or individuals – who employ high-fee managers.

If you want average returns, “buy-and-hold” is a great strategy.
The funny thing is that Buffett never accepted “average returns.” And contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t just buy-and-hold stocks for the long term.
