Founder Elon Musk plans to build a “self-growing city” on the moon.

SpaceX rockets could launch materials and Optimus robots to the moon. These robots could then be used to build an entire city within the next 10 years.

“The capabilities we unlock by making space-based data centers a reality will fund and enable self-growing bases on the Moon, an entire civilization on Mars and ultimately expansion to the Universe,” according to Elon’s recent shareholder letter.

This marks a big pivot for Musk. The entrepreneur was previously focused on colonizing Mars.

However, it’s only possible to launch rockets to Mars every 26 months. Whereas it’s possible to launch to the moon every 10 days. Frequent launches would allow SpaceX to quickly deploy materials and robots to the moon much more quicky.

A lunar city could cost over $100 billion according to some estimates.

SpaceX continues to proceed with plans for an IPO by June.
