Space Exploration Technologies requested approval to launch one-million satellites to create space-based AI data centers on January 30.

The solar powered satellites would be launched on the company’s rockets and orbit at 500 – 2,000 kilometers. They would create a constellation of interconnected data centers.

The Federal Communications Commission moved swiftly with a public notice requesting comments on the plan.

“The FCC welcomes and now seeks comment on the SpaceX application for Orbital Data Centers.

The proposed system would serve as a first step towards becoming a Kardashev II-level civilization and serve other purposes, according to the applicant,” according to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.

Elon Musk isn’t the only one planning to launch AI data centers into orbit. Amazon, Google and Nvidia are also developing similar plans.

SpaceX plans to raise up to $50 billion in an IPO to fund this huge undertaking.

Here’s how to claim your stake before the stock starts trading.
