The application with the FCC was filed late Friday afternoon – and it was titled:
Application for Launch and Operating Authority for the SpaceX Orbital Data Center System.
“Launching a million satellites that operate as orbital data centers is a first step towards becoming a Kardashev II-level civilization—one that can harness the Sun’s full power-while supporting Al-driven applications for billions of people today and ensuring humanity’s multi-planetary future amongst the stars,” according to the filing.
SpaceX plans to launch satellites to orbit at an altitude of 500 – 2,000 kilometers. The satellites will be powered by solar and have constant exposure to sunlight.
Orbital data centers are the most efficient way to meet the growing demand for AI computing.
The company’s 9,600 Starlink communication satellites will be critical for allowing space-based AI data centers to communicate with earth.
The FCC application confirms that Elon Musk’s Space Master Plan is proceeding. That new plan is the primary reason that the company is planning an Initial Public Offering to raise $30 – $50 billion in capital.
