The FCC just approved Starlink’s plan for a significant expansion.
It’s an important move that will support SpaceX plans to launch one-million satellite data centers in the coming years.
Go here for details on Elon Musk’s new Space Master Plan.
SpaceX had requested to launch an additional 7,500 Gen2 Starlink satellites.
These satellites orbit at 340km – 485km above earth. This lower orbit allows them to have faster communication speeds. Additionally, the new satellites will allow direct communication with smartphones.
50% of the satellites will be launched within 2 years. The remaining 50% must be in orbit by the end of 2031.
The FCC approved the plan will expand Starlink’s satellite footprint by nearly 80%.
SpaceX is also in the process of seeking approval for a massive constellation of AI data center satellites. The expansion of Starlink will help support the communication between this new constellation and earth.
The company plans to raise up to $50 billion in an upcoming IPO to fund the initiative.
Here’s how to claim a stake before it goes public.
