A lot of people think it’s impractical or simply not possible.
But Musk is determined to make it happen.
Here’s why SpaceX going public could help him achieve this goal.
For many years, SpaceX executives said the company wouldn’t go public until missions to Mars were routine.
But that stance changed last year.
SpaceX has spent years developing computing hardware suitable for an AI satellite network, and late last year the company made technical breakthroughs that made orbital data centers feel achievable.
Meanwhile, there are other key AI figures who see the idea possible.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is one of them.
Jeff Bezos has publicly said that orbital data centers make sense.
But it was Musk who really pushed the idea late last year saying that solar-powered AI satellites are the future.
Launching thousands of AI satellites would be extremely expensive…
And SpaceX’s leadership concluded that accessing the U.S. IPO market was the most realistic path to make it happen.
That’s why CFO Bret Johnsen sent staff a memo saying one key reason for going public was to “deploy AI data centers in space.”
The IPO is widely expected to be the biggest of all time.
