On Wednesday morning at 3:38 a.m. . . .

A red, white and blue Boeing 767 departed from Shenzhen, China.

The plane was decorated with the New England Patriots logo and the words “6X CHAMPIONS.”

On board were 1.2 million N95 masks heading to Boston Logan International Airport.

This story starts with Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker.

Like most governors, he was concerned about running out of N95 masks for health-care workers in his states.

Two weeks ago, he’d arranged to purchase over 1 million N95 masks from several Chinese manufacturers.

Yet shipping the N95 masks via conventional methods wouldn’t work. Or the time and delays wouldn’t get the masks to Massachusetts quickly enough.

Baker called his friend Jonathan Kraft – the son of Patriot’s owner Robert Kraft. Jonathan is the chairman of the board at Massachusetts General Hospital. And he’s also the president of Patriots.

The governor began working with the State Department to get special permits in place. They needed approval from China to fly the plane into the country for the medical mission.

Last week, they received approval from China. The plane could land in China as long as everybody stayed on the plane. And it could only be on the ground for three hours.

The Boeing 767 flew to Alaska to refuel. And then continued on to Shenzhen.

Once it landed, the plane was grounded for two hours and 57 minutes.

During this time, a Chinese ground crew loaded 1.2 million N95 masks into the hold of the plane. Another 500,000 masks had been purchased, but were unable to fit in the cargo hold.

At 3:38 a.m. on Wednesday, the Patriots plane departed China, flew back to Alaska for fuel and continued on to Massachusetts.

Today that plane will land in Boston.

The Kraft family generously provided the plane and all the logistics. And the family also spent $2 million to cover 50% of the cost of the masks.

900,000 of the masks will stay in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Kraft says that 300,000 of the masks will be delivered to New York where hospitals are desperately short on supplies.

Meanwhile, 500,000 N95 masks remain in China. And another trip will bring those masks into the U.S.

Sometimes it takes a pandemic to get sports rivals like Bostonians and New Yorkers to come together. This story shows that America IS coming together – and we will get through this.
